Sutton’s Story

Created with endless thanks to Anthony English

When we knew Sutton would be having a major surgery for her cochlear implants, much of the emotional stress fell on myself and Dave. Honestly, at age 3, Sutton didn’t really know that she was going deaf. I know a time will come when we have to have “the talk” (no not that one….although we will have that one too) but the talk about her story of how she lost her hearing.

In our family, we think stories are important. We love hearing them, telling them, and sharing them with others. Sutton’s story is special. I wanted to do it justice. For a few weeks I racked my brain about how we would share with her about our journey to getting her cochlear implants. I am a big fan of shutterfly books…but a book just didn’t feel like enough. I knew we could just show her pictures on our phone and tell her verbally, but I wanted something more than just pictures.

But a video… a video we would keep forever. We LOVE our wedding video, and having it is so special to look back on year after year. So, I started the hunt for a videographer who would want to share our story. A friend connected us with Anthony English… and what a gift he was to our family. Anthony listened, edited, showed up to a 3 year old soccer practice, and showed our family’s unique story beautifully. We know that cochlear implants are not for everyone. We know that this path is not the path that every parent of a child with hearing loss will choose. And that is ok with us. We want to share our story to shed a light on raising a child with hearing loss.

Sutton’s story is our story. And our story is still being written by a great Author. We hope you enjoy.
